Happy Tuesday mes amies! To my UK and US readers, I hope you all having the most wonderful extended weekend. To everyone else, I give you an excellent excuse to indulge in a little internet fuelled procrastination on your second morning back at work. Namely, 3 Ways To Wear It, the Breton striped t-shirt edition…
Show me a woman (or man for that matter) who doesn’t own a Breton striped t-shirt and I’ll show you someone with a gaping whole in their wardrobe/life/soul. Personally, I have an entire draw dedicated to them and boasting all manner of stripe widths, sleeve lengths and colour combinations. Then again, I do have a tendency to be rather obsessive over things that I like. But while my own collection may be excessive, I firmly believe that a Breton striped t-shirt is one of the most versatile, practical and useful pieces around. There are countless places to pick up one of these Breton beauties but Petit Bateau will always be, at least to my mind, the ultimate classic. The one I’m wearing here is the Mariniere Long Sleeved style which is £58 and available online here. Not the cheapest but such good quality, I’ve literally had this one for about five years! I’ve also included a few of my other striped tee picks at the bottom of this post including a few that are rather easier on the wallet.

On the whole I, like most people, find myself pairing said tees with denim for a casual Riviera chic vibe, best accessorized with luxe sneakers and a hearty dose of wannabe Parisian nonchalance. There’s not a great deal more I can say about this laid back Breton t-shirt styling except for a) choose really well fitting, good quality denim. I’m currently obsessing over AG Jeans (so freaking comfy!) and you can never go wrong with Topshop’s Baxter skinnies. And b) make sure you have a leather biker jacket and badass shades at the ready.

The Breton striped t-shirt is an interesting beast. Nothing manages to execute a casual feel in quite such a polished manner and, simultaneously, it also lends itself beautifully to all things preppy. To be honest, sleek stripes and ice whites are far more Hamptons friendly than they are Left Bank louche so how brilliantly (I think) this prep-tastic take on it came off isn’t all that surprising. Nothing screams “country club” quite like a tennis ready pleated mini and this one is, highly appropriately, by Tory Burch. Then I took things to the next lev of prep with kitten heels, clashing patterns, pop socks, Kate Spade shades and, of course, a fur pom pom.

Casual and preppy may be a walk in the park for a Breton striped t-shirt but “after dark” is an altogether more challenging proposition. I mean, who the HELL wears a Breton striped t-shirt after 6pm!? I then thought a little more about this question and in fact, I do, pretty often. I’m not saying I’d rock one to a cocktail party or a black tie ‘do but for extended-that-turns-into-drinks with friends, post work vino or other similar occasions it’s kind of perfect. Comfortable and with a certain low key cool, when paired with brights, mega heels and various glam accoutrements the fail safe, wear with everything Breton striped tee takes on a different kind of elegance. I wore this black and white version out for a “quick dinner” the other week and got home at 4am having had the most awesome night… If that doesn’t prove this theory then nothing would.
Without further ado, what’s YOUR favourite way to style a Breton Striped T-Shirt? I’m always in the market for outfit inspiration so would love to hear any tips and tricks!
Love Ella. X
