I have to say, 3 Ways To Wear it is one of my personal favourite posts to do. Aside from the obvious fact that I enjoy few things more than getting dressed up and having my picture taken (not the most attractive character trait I admit) I also find it really helps me with my own wardrobe planning. It was only putting an after dark spin on my Tory Burch shorts suit that made me realise that my demure daytime two piece could in fact work for cocktail hour too. And, lest we forget, how with an injection of pastel green a leather mini skirt can miraculously come over all preppy. Working out how to wear one piece three decent, different ways has certainly forced me to develop a few nifty styling tricks, not to mention made me really realise both the value of wardrobe staples and the versatility of more trend led pieces. The subject of today’s post is a bit of both…
As I’m sure you all already know, sixties chic is huge this season with everyone from Gucci to Nicolas Ghesquière for Louis Vuitton getting Twiggy with it (sorry). What with it’s thigh skimming hemline, A line cut and modish monochrome hue, this REISS mini could not be more of the mo’. At the same time a little white skirt is also something that’s never going to go out of style. Vis-à-vis, it’s a bang on trend investment piece AKA the holy grail of purchases. So first and foremost, how to wear this gem of a purchase for everyday, early autumn outings. Personally I’d pair this skirt with a classic Oxford shirt and equally classic trench coat, then add a contemporary twist via the accessories. While I’m by no means a sneaker aficionado – although I have accumulated a few, largely floral, pairs – I utterly adore sportif footwear paired with tailored clothing. In a strange sort of way, it feels cooler and more effortless than the same clothing worn with slip on flats and a t-shirt.
Ok, so my “casual” spin on the little white skirt may have had an air of prep but knee high socks are involved in this take on the little white skirt therefore making it the official preppy version. After all, there’s really nothing more preppy than matching errrrrrthing is there? Ordinarily I’m attracted to the most garish possible prints and colours like a small child is to E numbers but despite myself, I do have to admit that there are few things as striking as a strong monochrome look. Add pops of pillarbox red into the mix and I’m yours, or rather this skirts’, for the taking. I did consider pairing the skirt with a cutesy jumper over Peter Pan collar type top half but settled on the poloneck sweater instead. Much as I’m a sucker for that kind of five year old style layering, the matchy matchy accessories gives this look more than enough of an Upper East Side vibe while still remaining just the right side of cartoon character… I think.
Last but most certainly not least, how to style up this skirt for when the sun goes down. This little white skirt may lend itself well to everyday prep but it’s clearly game for a party. Perhaps not an all night rave in an abandoned warehouse (not exactly my favourite way to cut loose) but a night of decadent debauchery, certainly. Many people say that peplum tops should only be worn with drainpipe trousers, pencil skirts or other items that create a similarly figure hugging silhouette. While I appreciate the theory behind that, in practice I reckon a peplum looks gorgeous with an A-line skirt. It creates this gorgeous, gently undulating silhouette from hip to hem which is incredibly flattering on pretty much any body type. Clearly I’m physically incapable of kicking my addiction to things that match one another so I pulled it together with shoes, clutch and lip in a similar (ish) shade of red.
As I said at the beginning of this post, doing a 3 Ways To Wear It helps me with my own wardrobe so much! The “after dark” version of this particular edition is currently in New York with me where I plan to wear it to something fabulous during fashion week. And so, without further outfit related rambling, which take on the little white skirt will you be werking this season?
Love Ella. X
