5 Minutes with… Alejandro Ingelmo

Attached as I am to my collection of French Sole ballet pumps, there’s something about pair of heels that should come with a health warning that I just can’t resist. After all, even the cutest of flats don’t have the same leg lengthening, bum wiggling, attitude giving effects that come with six inch stilettos. Well if it’s killer heels you’re after, then Alejandro Ingelmo is your man. The Cuban designer’s vertiginous creations have earnt him a legion of famous fans including Madonna and Mary-Kate Olsen, numerous award nominations and a formidable fash pack following. I caught up with New York’s cobbler-of-the-moment to get the low down on his inspirations, aspirations and plans for the future…

LPA: What was the intital inspiraion behind your AW12 collection?

Alejandro: I was inspired by geometry and architecture. I also drew inspiration from the materials in the collection; mink, python, iridescant patents and jewel toned suedes.

LPA: What can we expect to see from Alejandro Ingelmo this year?

Alejandro: My plan is to expand the collection to include leather goods and women’s handbags.

LPA: What do you think is the key to good personal style?

Alejandro: Personal style is an attitude and a lot of it has to do with being comfortable in what you’re wearing.

LPA: Where do you look for inspiration when starting on a new collection?

Alejandro: Everywhere… So many different things inspire me; people, architecture, New York, travelling…

LPA: What’s the most valuable fashion advice you’ve ever received?

Alejandro: A professor once told me to be true to my design and I have always remembered that when working on my collections.

LPA: What has been your proudest moment in fashion so far?

Alejandro: Opening my first store on Wooster Street in New York.
