If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that high street/designer collaborations are extremely high-risk ventures. Some can be utterly inspired (i.e Marni for H&M) whereas others (not naming any names) turn out downright tacky. Artist/designer collaborations on the other hand are rarely anything other than stunning. A few months ago my mum and I decided to pay a visit to Damien Hirst’s exhibition at the Tate Modern. Naturally we forgot to book tickets and the queue was so enormous we just couldn’t face it. Instead, we went to another exhibit on the work of Yayoi Kusama and thank God we did because 5 minutes I decided that the Japanese octogenarian was pretty much my new favourite artist. Since then I’ve become fixated with Kusama’s psychedelic creations so imagine my delight when I discovered, a couple of months later that she would be joining forces with a certain Mr Marc Jacobs to design a capsule collection for Louis Vuitton!
The result of this match made in sartorial heaven: an array of playful, colour-popping concoctions that imbue high fashion sophistication with a childlike sense of humour. What I love most about the collection is the fact that both Kusama and Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton’s aesthetics are so clearly visible. The all-immersing sea of dots with which Kusama has become synonymous is perfectly fused with Louis Vuitton’s feminine elegance. Put simply, it’s polkadot perfection.
