Fashion With A Conscience: Liberty of London Launches “Save it With A Scarf”

Fashion may not have a reputation for being the most compassionate industries around but in actual fact, the sartorial community does more than it’s fair share to help people and places suffering all over the world. In March this year a veritable who’s who of big name designers including Stella McCartney and Oscar De La Renta volunteered to take part in Runway to Green, a charitable fashion show held in New York to raise money for various environmental causes. Just this month supermodel and founder of Fashion for Relief, Naomi Campbell organized her own red carpet extravaganza to aid the Japanese Red Cross following the devastation caused by the recent earthquake. Closer to home, iconic British department store Liberty of London has teamed up with the World Land Trust to launch the latest in a long line of charitable fashion initiatives, “Save it With A Scarf”.

The project saw final-year Textile Design students at Winchester School of Art being given the unique opportunity to create a scarf to represent World Land Trust conservation projects around the world. Out of the hundreds of applicants, five designs were chosen to go on sale in Libertys amongst their own revered selection of scarves and 15% from the sale of each one will be donated to the World Land Trust to aid conservation projects in desperate need of funding.

Now not having seen the WLT’s conservation projects in Borneo or India, I can’t say whether or not the chosen designs are much on an accurate representation. However what I can say without a shadow of doubt is that the scarves are utterly exquisite and will most likely sell out in seconds, raising oodles of much-needed cash for a thoroughly worthwile cause.
