Introducing: Giulietta

Do you believe in love at first sight? Obviously I’m not talking about the romantic kind. Let’s not be ludicrous. L’amour is not the focus of La Petite Anglaise except of course when said feelings of burning passion are directed at clothes… And shoes and bags, of course. The second I laid eyes on the Giulietta SS15 collection at the Americans in Paris showroom back in September I knew it was the start of a beautiful relationship…

In the highly unlikely event that you hadn’t already clocked this, I’m not exactly cool as a cucumber in many, if not most situations. As most people that know me would tell you, I have a slight tendency to get over excited about certain things. Ice skating for instance, or fabulous social engagements involving dear friends. Just the other week I arrived at a gorgeous dinner for jewellery brand, CARAT. I was fresh back from the Rolls Royce factory – which, if you’ve read this post, you’ll know sent me into paroxysms of luxury related excitement – and had spent overt two hours fidgeting in the car and anticipating the lovely evening ahead of me. By the time I arrived I’d wound myself up so much that I got terrible, noisy hiccups the second we sat down to eat. This no doubt either made me seem mad, drunk or both which was pretty embarrassing. I’ve gone off on a a bit of a tangent here (what else is new?) but my point is that I’m prone to losing my cool at inopportune moments and nothing has this effect on me more than fashion. I fear that I gibbered and gushed over the Giulietta collection so much that I seemed like a total imbecile and I’m pretty sure I uttered the phrase “I cannot even!” at some point… Oh, the shame of it. Then again, can you blame me? I mean just LOOK at those picture pretty prints, the laser cut lattice skirts, the gobstopper jewel embellished collars!!

I felt almost as though designer Sofia Sizzi had looked into my brain and knew exactly what I most wanted to be wearing. But this isn’t really about me, despite what this entire post has so far suggested. It’s about a brand that I predict is going to be big, big news very soon. Unbeknown to me at that point, Giulietta was in fact making waves already. After 15 years working for the likes of Gucci, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, Florence born, New York based Sofia decided to go it alone and was almost immediately named one of the ten CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists. Since then her own brand creations have adorned the likes of  Lupita Nyong’o, Miranda Kerr and Michelle Williams (hopefully your’s truly soon!) as well as being featured in W Magazine, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue Italia to name but a handful.

The secret to Giulietta’s success and appeal is, I think her clear, covetable and original aesthetic. Sofia cites the 1960s as a constant source of inspiration (very apt this season) but reinterprets the decade’s iconic codes in a way that feels fresh and contemporary with each piece rooted in the artisan craftsmanship and exquisite attention to detail characteristic of the Italian fashion tradition. Simply put, Giulietta is all about fresh femininity and playful elegance. Or to simplify things even further; platform shoes with crystals on them, can you even!?
