Never has a catwalk look caused such widespread furore throughout the fashion world as Miuccia Prada‘s fabulously kooky banana prints. At first glance they appeared the epitome of bad taste and their appearance in the collection of a fashion house renowned for it’s impeccably elegant style somewhat unbelievable. But take a second look and you will realise that Prada’s playful prints have ushered in a new, and all together more light hearted fashion era.

If even the highest echelons of high fashion are serving their new season style with a side of fun, surely it’s time for the rest of us to wave goodbye to prescribed ‘good taste’ and inject a little irony into our wardrobes. Indeed the sight of Ms Prada herself appearing to take her bow wearing pair of comedy banana earrings served as living proof that it is well and truly time to embrace our quirky sides.

And Miuccia’s not the only designer going bananas (sorry couldn’t resist) this season. Even London’s answe to Christian Louboutin, Charlotte Olympia has got in on the act with her fabulous banana platforms. These beauties sold out everywhere within seconds and have cropped up in every fash mag, hot blog and lust list as ‘must-have’s’ for SS11.

With novelty prints at Prada, DIY style embellishment at Louise Gray and mix n’ match mayhem at Meadham Kirchoff there’s no end to the fun we can have dressing up this season.

This trend is most certainly NOT one for the boys (my own boyfriend visibly paled at the mention of socks and sandals) but frankly, who the hell cares? I’ll definitely be digging out the dressing up box and scouring every charity shop in town on the hunt for as many unapologetic prints and kooky accessories as I can lay my hands on.

Go for maximum impact in clashing patterns, gaudy baubles and eccentric embellishments and unleash the mad-old-lady within. After all, (style) rules are made to be broken.
