I’m sure you’ll agree that when it comes to certain sartorial combinations, some are just utter gold. Leather and leopard for instance, if worn a la Moss as opposed to a la Del Olio. Florals and flatforms are another goodie, as is the classic Red, White and Blue. A perhaps more underrated, although no less fabulous, killer combo is neon and denim. Given that bright colours are my bread and butter, it’s not exactly a shocker that highlighter luminosity isn’t something I consider a negative in an item of clothing. But as much as I adore the kind of radioactive hue that demands its wearer, and everyone around them, wears sunglasses at all times, neon can be disastrous if not applied with caution. If you ask me, there is one failsafe way of ensuring that you don’t end up with a neon nightmare is by throwing a little denim into the mix.
This look involves neon green (duh), pink, yellow and pink again. Hell, even my RayBans have a certain raver tinge to them! I was sorely tempted to add an electric yellow silk shirt, or the bold printed Jonathan Saunders t-shirt that I picked up at the same sample sale as this incredible skirt. On the subject of said skirt, it was a total steal at £30! I mean, £30 for Jonathan Saunders!! That’s less than goddamn topshop! But anyway, I digress. Instead of giving in to my urge to slip down the rabbit hole into a top-to-toe neon disaster, I gathered my limited wits together and decided that a simple – and somewhat ironically – topshop denim shirt was the answer. Then obviously I added a jaunty, multi patterned silk scarf because, I mean, why wouldn’t you?
What’s your view on neon brights? To be avoided at all costs, paired with denim, or worn with reckless abandon?
Love Ella. X
