Valentines Wish List 2013

Two weeks to go until Valentines Day and shops, restaurants and bars everywhere are no doubt eagerly awaiting, or already enjoying, the clink of their tills growing ever fuller. This makes me sound like I’m one of those ultra cynical types who refuse to partake in any sort of V Day celebrations on the grounds that it’s a purely commercial holiday which I’m really not. I’m not an idiot, I’m fully aware that  February 14th is a perfect excuse for retailers and restauranteurs to cash in on those of us with more romantic natures. But, my fashion loving friends, it’s also an excuse to demand an extravagant and entirely undeserved present from that special someone or, just buy one for yourself! Here are a few of my valentines wishes this year, let’s hope the bf’s feeling generous…

LPA Loves: Print Denim

I know I talk about this a lot and really should have gotten over it by now but isn’t it SO frustrating that the weather refuses to comply with the fashion seasons? The fash mags are bursting with pastels, florals, lightweight jackets and even a bit of broderie anglaise but much to my endless irritation it’s still too bloody cold to wear any of it! There is, however, one solution. Well actually there are two. The first is just to be seriously brave/foolish and just wear it all now, regardless of whether the result might be hypothermia. The second, rather more feasible option is to channel the new season vibe while not risking hypothermia… How? Print denim. Until last year I wasn’t all that in to denim due to my deep seated and entirely misguided belief that skirts were chicer, sexier and generally more glamourous. But all of that changed thanks to a pair of pastel blue J Brands which I wore to parties, press days, meetings, hot dates, picnics and basically every other conceivable occasion. Since then I’ve experimented with lengths, washes, leather finishes and eye-popping hues but this season I’m going to be all about print denim. Not only is it a failsafe way to update your wardrobe but, as I noted at the press days way back last autumn, SS13 brings with is some truly awesome styles. Here are a few I’m currently coveting…

I know some of these jeans are pretty “out there” but just work with me on this one. Imagine them dressed down with a plain white tee or pattern clashed with a bold print shirt, either way it’s FROW worthy!

Raquel Allegra X Matches

Raquel Allegra

You all know how much I love a brand with a backstory and making your first collection from recycled prison shirts is certainly a good one. Sounds a bit urban fashion legend I know but that’s precisely how A-List favourite, Raquel Allegra got started. Growing up with artisan parents inspired the Californian designer to approach fashion with an experimental attitude. In lieu of learning traditional tailoring techniques Raquel developed her own unique style of fabric manufacture involving mix n’ match textiles, shredding and webbing. But this innovative approach wasn’t all part of Raquel’s plan to be a designer. In fact, I was surprised to learn that she never actually had any intention to work in fashion. Raquel Allegra actually moved to Los Angeles in 2000 with dreams of becoming a singer and, like many aspiring songstresses, found herself taking a job at a boutique in order to pay the rent and making her own clothes out of necessity. But what started out as a personal project using unwanted shirts from the Los Angeles Country Prison System soon captured the LA fashion pack’s attention and mere months later Raquel Allegra designs were being spotted on everyone from Heidi Klum to the Olsen twins. Nowadays her collections stock (and sell out) everywhere from New York to Taiwan and Raquel’s trademark thrifted fabrics sit alongside the luxe likes of deerskin, linene, cashmere and French lace.

Raquel Allegra

I was very pleased to hear the news that this season one of my absolute FAVE shopping destinations, Matches, had enlisted Raquel to design an exclusive capsule collection for them. Admittedly “laid back luxe” and “deconstructed” aren’t usually words synonymous with my personal style but, as you might remember, one of this year’s fasholutions was to take fashion risks and go “less Alexa more Carine”… A little bit of Raquel Allegra for Matches would certainly be a chic way to do it. How hot would the spotted chiffon boxy tee look with a slick leather pencil skirt, bare leg, big sunglassed and skyscraping ankle boots? I feel Ms Roitfeld would approve.

The collection will launch at the end of January but if you can’t wait, click here to shop Raquel Allegra at Matches now.
