Prada SS13

Prada SS13

Here we have another extremely belated press day post, but seeing as the brand in question is none other than Prada, I’m sure you’ll forgive the delay. Last week I interviewed the Creative Director of a major footwear brand (more on that coming your way soon) who revealed to me that she owns a catwalk look from every Prada show since 1991… That’s two for every single year I’ve been alive! If she hadn’t been so lovely I would have run out of the room screaming from pure, unadulterated jealousy.

For the past couple of years I have worshipped at the altar of Miuccia Prada. Not only does she create clothes that reduce normally sane individuals to wailing wrecks (case in point: me last week) but the inimitable Italian fashion doyenne seems to do whatever the hell she wants (banana earrings anyone?) and always managed to pull it off with stylish aplomb. Take her SS13 offerings for example. Fur coats aren’t exactly commonplace in the Spring collections but when Miuccia decrees it, suddenly Mink in March seems like a no brainer. Then there are the shoes… The embellished flatform styles that appeared on the runway infused ladylike elegance with a healthy dose of quirky cool while adorable flower detailed flip flops provided the perfect commercial alternative.

The clothes themselves also took many by surprise when they first appeared back in September although given Prada’s uncanny knack for pulling a sartorial 360, they really shouldn’t have. Long gone were last Summer’s chiffon pleats and nostaligic Americana. In their place came clean lines, structural silhouettes and Duchesse satin, folded and manipulated to evoke an air of Japonese kimono dressing. Having ogled every look about a million times on since the show it was amazing to see them in person and run my hands over the super luxe fabrics and floral applique detailing. I left Prada’s Mayfair Hq with a new personal goal… If I can own a runway look from just one year’s worth of collections, then I’ll be an exeedingly happy girl.

Unexpected Trend: Trouser Suits AW12

trouser suits

While the gothic luxe trend may not exactly be a shocker for Autumn/Winter, I challenge anyone to claim that they seriously expected to see trouser suits returning to the fashion fore during their lifetime. I don’t know about you, but until recently the phrase “trouser suit” conjured up of ill-fitting nylon, sloppy tailoring and sludgy greys. Well, after spending God know how many seasons banished to bargain bins and middle management, they’re back on the sartorial menu.

Weekly Wish List, Milan Edition

There’s less than a month to go until New York fashion week begins and I’m already on to installment three of my fashion week themed wish lists, the Milan edition. As I mentioned before, every time I express my excitement about the impending celebrations of all things stylish via twitter it illicits a series of less than positive responses from my fashion friends. I’ll admit, now it’s time to really start thinking about ticket requests, scheduling and most importantly, wardrobe options, I’m starting to feel a little stressed out myself. This season I’ll be spending six days (and nights) in NYC before returning to cover the shows and parties back home in London. So overall, I’ll need to come up with a whopping 22 outfits. And not your run-of-the-mill combos either. We’re talking fashion forward, pap-worthy, jealousy inducing ensembles. But before I break out in hives over this most difficult of dilemmas, let’s take a moment to appreciate the new season offerings from our favourite Italian brands. Having blown my budget on New York flights, phone bills and a Prosecco fuelled Peter Pilotto shopping spree, I can’t quite fund a trip to Milan this season so if any fashion fairy Godmothers out there want to sweep me off my feet, now’s your moment!

Another week, another wish list… You’d have thought I might have grown tired of browsing the SS12 collections by now but somehow, I haven’t. Maybe it’s because the weather’s been so dire I’m still yet to actually wear any of my new season purchases, or maybe it’s thanks to those crafty brands continually releasing more sartorial treats. Most likely it’s just a sign of my shopping addiction, but with tropical brights and punchy prints galore up for grabs, can you really blame me?

Look Du Jour: Bringing back Barbie

What: Blouse: Topshop, Skirt: America Apparel, Shoes: Bertie, Bag: Oliver Bonas, Necklace: Anne Bowes Jewellery

As you may have noticed, I’ve recently re-discovered my love of all things pink. This season the girly girls favourite has been rescued from the realms of barbie style WAG-dom and reinstated on our style radar. It’s sudden chic-over has come courtesy of Jason Wu, DKNY and Prada who led the pink parade for SS12 with a kaleidescope of saccharine to super bright shades. Even the usually tomboyish Acne got in on the act with a delicious cupcake coloured finale. Now I know that no one likes to admit that their outfit choices are overly influenced by what crops up on the catwalk but it certainly provides inspiration. When I saw the first bubblegum number sashay down the runway I practically jumped for joy and immediately decided to try out a few of these luscious looks myself. After all, if it’s good enough for Miuccia…
