After SS12’s fixation with all things sportif, the current fashion-world-wide varsity jacket obsession shouldn’t really have come as a surprise. Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part as, not being the biggest fan of athletic chic, I was more than ready to wave it goodbye come August. But even if somewhere at the back of my mind was an inkling that track ready touches wouldn’t be disappearing anytime soon, much more shocking than the prevalence of varsity jackets for AW12 was the fact that, despite myself, I rather like them.
After thinking long and hard about my sudden desire to slip into something slouchy I’ve come to the conclusion that the appeal of the teen movie style staple can be put down to a few significant reasons. Firstly, even the most poised among us experience days when the idea of cinched waists and blouses just doesn’t appeal. Secondly, when everyone from Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony (top) to Stella McCartney and Loewe put varsity jackets – albeit in extremely different guises – on the catwalk, it’s clearly a trend worth trying. Finally and possibly most crucially, this is one style than the high street well and truly nails.

Having initially written off the varsity jacket as ‘sports luxe’ therefore not my cup of tea I decided to reconsider. While it may be loosely tailored, ultra casual and worst of all, comfy, this particular form of gym fit outerwear isn’t reserved for dressed down Fridays only. Add an A-line skirt, ankle boots and a sweetly preppy shirt et voila, fashion week ready!
Will YOU be wearing varsity jackets this season?
Love Ella. X
