Winter Blues

After spending 19 years of my life in London, I have come to the conclusion that I will never, EVER be quite so enamoured with another city. Paris may be ridiculously beautiful and New York the most vibrant place on the planet but as a certain ruby slippered girl from Kansas once said, there’s no place like home. And there’s certainly no place like London during the run-up to Christmas! With this is mind I headed into the centre of town first thing on Monday morning. Christmas shopping may be a time-consuming, handbag-fund-draining nightmare but it’s an excellent excuse to indulge my love of browsing Bond Street in all its tastefully decorated glory. Luckily it was a perfect winters day and I kicked things off by strolling through Green Park, latte in hand, whilst throwing pitying glances at school children and commuters and feeling intensely smug that I wasn’t one of them.

But my unnaturally zen state could only last so long and after meeting my Dad for a quick coffee it was time to get down to business. After a brief attempt to find presents for my more difficult relatives (you know who you are!) and a not-so-brief pitstop at the brand new Mulberry store (AKA heaven on earth) I was off flogging around town for castings, not an easy task in 4 inch heels.

My first appointment, a casting for Garnier, was conveniently just around the corner so naturally casting no. 2 had to be miles away. After finally arriving in the far reaches of East London I was overwhelmed by the urge to take full advantage of being in unfamiliar shopping territory and just hit the boutiques instead. With enormous self-restraint I forced myself to ignore the many, many pretty things peeping out from the surrounding window displays and made straight for the All Saints HQ. As per usual, there were so many obscenely beautiful girls there I immediately wondered why I’d even bothered. The annoying thing about castings is that (in my case anyway) you can run around London like a madwoman but the chances of actually getting any of the jobs in question are basically slim to none. However when the handbag fund is running low (due to Christmas present buying NOT excessive trips to Starbucks) frankly anything’s worth a shot. What to wear to castings aways poses a major sartorial dilemma. My style tends to be more preppy chic than model-off-duty cool, but I think this look just about nailed it.

My boyfriend and I are off to Barcelona tomorrow morning for a well-earned (ish) mini-break. Sadly I don’t think it’s going to be a great deal warmer there than it is here but I’m still planning to use the trip as a opportunity to give my many pairs of city shorts and micro-mini’s a much-needed outing. I don’t know about you but I’ve found that London’s current sub-zero temperatures make anything other than jeans and knitwear impossible.
